CONSTRUCTION JOB DESCRIPTION-CARPENTERS:
Construction carpenters Construct, erect, install, and repair
structures and fixtures of wood, plywood, and wallboard, using
carpenter's hand tools and power tools.
SKILLS:
Construction carpenters must know the materials, methods,
and tools involved in constructing houses, buildings, or other
structures; they must understand design techniques and know
how to use tools involved in production of plans, blueprints,
drawings, and models; they must have a working knowledge of
the practical application of engineering science and technology
as well as understand arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus,
statistics, and their applications.
AVAILABILITY:
Employment of carpenters is expected to grow as fast as average for all occupations through 2012. Job opportunities for carpenters are expected to be excellent over the 2002-2012 period, which is largely due to the numerous openings becoming available as experienced carpenters leave this large occupation.
CONSTRUCTION PAY SCALE:
In 2002 median hourly earnings of carpenters was $16.44. The average hourly earnings were $9.95 - $27.97. Median hourly earnings in the industries employing the largest numbers of carpenters in 2002 are shown below:
